{"id":32,"date":"2020-06-06T12:49:46","date_gmt":"2020-06-06T12:49:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatisculture.org\/?page_id=32"},"modified":"2022-03-03T05:08:40","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T05:08:40","slug":"cultural-intelligence-core-vs-flex","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/whatisculture.org\/?page_id=32","title":{"rendered":"Cultural Intelligence: Core vs. Flex"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In her TEDx talk, \u201cCultural Intelligence: the Competitive Edge for Leaders,\u201d Julia Middelton describes the concept of cultural intelligence and how it differs from IQ and EQ (emotional intelligence). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cultural intelligence: the competitive edge for leaders | Julia Middleton | TEDxEastEnd\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/izeiRjUMau4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A few key points of this talk are summarized below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Everyone has a \u201ccore\u201d that is a crucial part of their identity. <\/strong>A person\u2019s core is made up of beliefs, behaviors, and values that they won\u2019t adjust or compromise.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Everyone has a \u201cflex\u201d portion of their identity.<\/strong> This is composed of beliefs, behaviors, and values that a person is willing to adjust to better relate to others.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>People with high cultural intelligence know their own core and flex.<\/strong> They have a clear sense of what parts of their identity they will and won\u2019t adjust.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>People with high cultural intelligence are able to move the core\/flex boundary when appropriate.<\/strong> They can examine their assumptions and adjust their behaviors to adapt to different cultural contexts without compromising their integrity.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of her presentation, Middleton makes an important and somewhat counterintuitive point. She states that the true measure of someone\u2019s cultural intelligence isn\u2019t necessarily how much they\u2019ve traveled or how many different cultures they\u2019ve studied. Instead, a more important factor is how well they understand their <em>own<\/em> culture\u2014the one(s) they grew up with or have spent considerable time immersed in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Culturally intelligent people understand what makes their own culture unique, how it influences their way of seeing the world, and how it can impact the way they judge and interact with people who are different.
